What Is a Trunnion Ball Valve?

A trunnion ball valve is a quarter-turn valve used to regulate the flow of media in a pipeline. A spherical disc or ball at the valve centre rotates to start or stop the flow of fluids through the pipe. This valve is useful in shut-off operations.

Components of the Trunnion Mounted Ball Valve

  • Body: This serves as a casing for the valve parts, providing support and holding them in place. Depending on its application, the valve body can be made from carbon steel, stainless steel, super duplex, etc
  • Ball: The valve ball is a spherically-shaped disc used to stop or start fluid flow. It connects to the trunnion and stem at both ends and is in a fixed position while it rotates.
  • Seat: The seat keeps the ball tightly in place to shut off fluid flow when the valve is closed. There are two types of valve seats: metal and soft seats.
  • Trunnion: This is an extra shaft in a trunnion ball valve that holds the ball in position from below, keeping it firmly attached. It can be an extension of the ball or welded to the ball.
  • Stem: The stem controls the ball’s movement. It connects the ball to the actuator. Trunnion ball valves have anti-blowout stems that are capable of handling high pressures and temperatures.
  • Injection: Injection fittings are used to inject sealing materials if the valve sealing fails and leakage occurs. They are designed in the stem and seat parts of the valve.
