Before sourcing your desired butterfly valve flange end, you need to know how they work and the various types.

How do Flanged Butterfly Valves Work

A quarter turn (90⁰) of the hand wheel in the anticlockwise direction opens the flanged butterfly valve. The valve disc then receives the rotating signal from the turning. Following this, the valve disc stays parallel to the pipe to make a clear passage for fluid to flow.

To close the valve, the hand wheel is turned for a quarter turn in the clockwise direction. As a result, the valve disc turns in the opposite direction, staying parallel to the pipe. Following this, no fluid will be able to pass through the valve.

To use the valve for throttling or to allow some fluid to pass through, the hand wheel should be turned just enough (but less than 90⁰). Flanged butterfly valve suppliers advise against using this type of valve for throttling purposes unless the pressure drop will be very low, so that the fluid flow doesn’t get obstructed.
