The API 6D specification, given by the American Petroleum Institute (API), is an international standard for pipeline valves. It covers the requirements and recommendations on how ball, check, gate, and plug valves undergo design, manufacturing, testing, and documentation for their application in pipeline systems. API 6D is the main specification applied for valves in pipeline service.

Components of the Ball Valve API 6D

  • Valve Body: This component holds and protects the internal parts of the valve. It is usually made of strong materials, such as stainless steel and carbon steel.
  • Ball: The ball has a hole through which fluid passes in an API 6D valve. This part is made of materials that are compatible with the media to avoid corrosion.
  • Actuator/handwheel: The actuator or handwheel is used in applying torque to the ball to start or stop fluid flow. While handwheels are manually operated, actuators are automatically operated.
  • Stem: This part connects and transmits torque from the actuator or handwheel to the ball. It is welded to the ball.
  • Packing: In an API 6D ball valve, the packing is a seal placed between the stem and bonnet to prevent leakage.
  • Bonnet: The bonnet protects the stem and packing seals. It is placed on top of the valve body and connected to the body using bolts and nuts.
  • Seat: This component supports the ball to prevent leakage. It provides a seal between the valve body and the ball. The material of the seat should be compatible with the fluid.

How Does an API 6D Ball Valve Work?

An API 6D ball valve functions by allowing or preventing fluid flow through a bore at the centre of its ball. To open the valve, the ball is rotated using the handwheel or actuator, causing the ball bore to be in line with the pipeline. This allows fluid to flow. To close the valve, the handwheel is rotated in the opposite direction, causing the ball to block the fluid.
